Inner Voices: Zurich – New York

The ZJO is thrilled to be back at Mehrspur – and even more so as part of the inaugural “Mehrspur Jazz Week: Local Cats!” New York is home to some of the most important orchestras, composers and arrangers in the history of jazz. From Duke Ellington and his orchestra at the Cotton Club in 1927 to the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra at the Village Vanguard in 2021, musicians from around the world have been inspired by the sound of the “Big Apple.” The music of people like Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely and Maria Schneider has influenced generations of composers, arrangers and even large ensembles, including the ZJO. In this special program, we would like to combine music written by and for members of the ZJO with our favorites from New York big band music.
