In September 2014, Steffen Schorn gave his debut as the musical director of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. Schorn came to Zurich in order to establish a unique band sound for the orchestra. After five years of intense musical collaboration, compositions and premieres are ample proof of the fact that Schorn has accomplished his mission. His passion for composing suites has left its musical mark on five seasons. This became clear not only through acoustic events for the ZJO, but it was widely remarked upon by the press. Pieces such as «Cellular Structures», performed at the Jazzfestival Schaffhausen, or the CD «Three Pictures» that consists entirely of compositions by Schorn, received praise from specialist authors. The magazine «DownBeat» reviewed the album and called Schorn «an emerging creative force on Europe’s large-ensemble scene».

We are very proud of the fact that Steffen Schorn will be official “composer in residence” for the Zurich Jazz Orchestra from September 2019 or the 19/20 season, respectively. We are already discussing his next compositions, suites, and CD projects, and will be integrated into our upcoming season program.

The two newly performed Schorn suites, «Melancholia» and «Walzer Suite», are destined to receive further praise. The orchestra is looking forward to playing the CD program «Three Pictures» again, at the Bird’s Eye Club in Basel or the Jazz Club Singen among other places.

Co-director Daniel Schenker, trumpet player and conductor at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, is assuming ad interim control once again – he already did so six years ago. The search for a suitable successor for Steffen Schorn will happen at the exact place where the new director will have to stand the test: on stage. The Zurich clubs Moods and Mehrspur will be the locations where the candidates present themselves to the orchestra and the audience. One thing is for sure: There are interesting times ahead for the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. We are looking forward to anything the future might bring.
