Zurich Jazz Orchestra featuring Karin Meier (voc)
In February, Karin Meier will return to continue the fruitful collaboration with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra that goes back many years. In addition to Karin’s original compositions, new interpretations of jazz standards and pop classics will be on the program, all arranged for the ZJO by Ed Partyka. The orchestra will perform in it’s expanded instrumentation, including french horn, tuba and a full spectrum of woodwind instruments to give the music added textures and timbres.
In addition to the music of Karin Meier, the orchestra will also perform instrumental music written by Ed Partyka, including the continued expansion and development of the new composition written to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the orchestra. The first movement of the work; “There Will Be Another You”, was premiered on October 2nd and the piece will evolve and continue to grow until May, 2026.
As always, both the instrumental and vocal arrangements will feature the outstanding soloists of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra.
Karin Meier, born in the Zurich Weinland region, began taking flute lessons at the age of five, followed shortly afterwards by piano lessons. While still a teenager, she joined the Winterthur acid jazz band Critical Acid as a singer, recording several albums with the group and performing concerts throughout Switzerland, as well as appearing on television and radio.
She then enrolled at the Lucerne School of Music, where she studied singing with Lauren Newton and Susanne Abbuehl, graduating in 2007. She went on to study classical singing with Barbara Locher.
She also worked as a singer, composer, and arranger in various projects, performing at venues including Moods Zurich, KKL Lucerne, Stadttheater Lucerne, HMTM Hanover (with the NDR Big Band), Bratislava Jazz Festival, Rote Fabrik Zurich, Progr Bern, and others. For 10 years, Karin Meier was the singer of the Lucerne Jazz Orchestra, with which she has toured throughout half of Europe. She works as a lecturer in singing and music education at the Lucerne and Zug Universities of Teacher Education, is married, and has two children.
