tonhalleAIR: Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich & Zurich Jazz Orchestra
The tonhalleAIR, which will take place every two years in the future, is entirely focused on musical and other encounters. Admission to the Münsterhof is free, chairs are available, but there is still plenty of room to stroll. Those who are hungry or thirsty will find a wide range of options.
“I have always been fascinated by music that blurs the boundaries between genres,” says Ed Partyka. ”I admire the pioneering experiments that visionary jazz and classical composers (as well as orchestral conductors and big band leaders) undertook in the 20th century to break down barriers and erase imaginary lines. The
Some of these experiments were more successful than others, and depending on where I am geographically, I sometimes still feel that we have a long way to go before we live in a universe without musical prejudice.”
Fortunately, Zurich is home to two world-class orchestras that are stylistically diverse, open to experimentation and completely free of musical prejudice. Our June project will bring together members of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra for the first time in a 35-piece “jazz wind ensemble”. Members of both orchestras will perform as soloists and we will play a mixture of historically significant jazz music by Duke Ellington, George Russell and Charlie Parker, as well as contemporary music by Eliane Elias, Wayne Shorter and Kenny Kirkland.
