Founded in 1995, the Zurich Jazz Orchestra is one of the most innovative and relevant line-ups in the European big band scene – a scene that is always hungry for more. Under the direction of German composer and saxophonist Steffen Schorn, with Swiss trumpet player Daniel Schenker as co-leader, the band presents the thoroughly compelling album, Three Pictures. Schorn‘s complex compositions and arrangements combine jazz and classical, tradition and innovation. We hear the orchestral language of Gil Evans, as well as new and perfectly nuanced tonal shades. Composed passages and improvisations, dissonance and harmony, all entering into an exciting dialogue together. The ensemble‘s energetic music is like a multicoloured flying carpet. The solos from greats such as Christoph Grab, René Mosele, and Steffen Schorn himself, illuminate the vast universe through which this carpet soars. Intellect, curiosity, sensuality: here they become one.
