Cinzia Catania (*1988) grew up in Lenzburg, Aargau, in a very artistic environment. The voice of the young Swiss singer and composer is unique – crystal clear and yet warm and soft. Light as a feather and with rhythmic precision, she sings bossa nova and swing and easily masters technically and harmonically complex jazz compositions. And yet her voice is powerful and passionate, especially when she lets her Sicilian roots flow into the music. Due to her versatility and vocal flexibility, she is active in numerous national and international projects of different styles; from jazz, Latin, world, pop and electronic music to Swiss folk music. She has already released three albums under her name and can also be heard on many other recordings of different projects.
Cinzia studied jazz composition in Lucerne with Ed Partyka and has established herself as one of the most interesting composers of music for jazz orchestra of her generation. In 2017 she won the first prize as well as the audience award at the prestigious international jazz composition competition “Jazz-Comp-Graz”.
The Zurich Jazz Orchestra is pleased to welcome Cinzia Catania as guest vocalist and composer for an evening of exciting new music for jazz orchestra “Made in Switzerland”.
Cinzia Catania came into contact with music at an early age through her artistic environment and initially learned to play the flute. However, her heart beat for singing and she also discovered her love for jazz and composition in high school. These three passions led Cinzia Catania to Groningen NL after graduating from high school to study jazz singing. Since her teacher Dena DeRose left her teaching position in Groningen, Cinzia decided to follow her teacher and mentor to Graz to complete her Bachelor’s degree at the Jazz Institute of the University of Arts Graz. She completed her master’s degree in vocal pedagogy at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, where she also immediately added a second master’s degree in composition to her backpack. Today, the half-Swiss and half-Sicilian lives in Aargau and travels throughout Europe as a renowned singer, composer and arranger.
