Episode #24

We talk to Ed Partyka about Gil Evans and his masterpieces, influence on jazz history after the Second World War, sound language and band leading. Ed also tells us which musicians he would like to work with outside of conventional big band jazz.

Gil Evans is a great inspiration for Ed Partyka in many ways. Gil Evans not only composed and arranged masterpieces, but also developed the sound language of jazz as a whole after the Second World War. Whereas the bass clarinet, tuba and French horn had previously only been heard in classical music, from then on they were also represented in a big band line-up and permanently broadened the palette of sound colors and texture of jazz music.
