Zurich Jazz Talks #20

The new season is just around the corner. As an introduction, we talked to Ed Partyka about our new season theme: “The Art of Arranging”. Our musical director knows a thing or two about the art of arranging. So he tells us not only what arranging means exactly, but also what it takes to make a successful arrangement.

Ed Partyka is not only an arranger and composer himself, but he also teaches these crafts at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. The first question he always asks his students at the beginning of the course is: “What can be changed?”. The answer is much simpler than one might think. It is, in fact, “everything.” But if you can change everything, when is the line crossed and a recomposition created? What should one pay attention to? What theoretical background and knowledge do you need to make a suitable arrangement?
