«New Plans» features compositions by musical conductor Rainer Tempel: «No other big band production I have ever worked for has presented me with such ample opportunity to rehearse my music, to perform it and to tailor it precisely to the band’s needs and qualities. When the continuity is as steady as it is here, eventually, you’ll know which piece will go well with which each soloist. With the course of time, I’ve been able to reflect on the pieces and to change them around.
As far as my writing is concerned, I’ve come back to the classical orchestration during the past years (little flute, little clarinet, etc.) – to more discreet orchestration. The compositions are modern in terms of harmonies and rhythm; but they do contain uneven measures. Mainly they are tonal, though, because melodies are very important to me. I love when musicians go home from rehearsals whistling my melodies.
I work on clear melodies and often turn them into dense passages. Then I try and combine the outcome with a rather progressive rhythm and harmonies. The ZJO has turned out to be a very progressive body of sound and implements this in a musically perfect way.»
